Archaeological excavations in Barcın Mound between 2005-2015 yielded data on the first inhabitants of Yenişehir Plain. Except for the upper layers dating to the Byzantine, Early Bronze Age, and Late Chalcolithic periods in the settlement, the best-preserved and hence the most extensively researched layer on the mound is dated to the Neolithic Period (6600-6000 BC). The information available for the Byzantine Period is mainly from written sources. Yet, the cemetery found in Barcın Mound, namely Yenişehir Plain (the hinterland of Byzantine İznik), which belongs to the 9th -11th centuries is extremely significant because of being a unique resource about the lifestyles of people in a village settlement. Age distributions and pathological studies can provide important data about the population there.
